Bark Culture is a Philadelphia-based trio led by vibraphonist Victor Vieira-Branco, featuring Joey Sullivan on drums and John Moran on bass. The band is touring their new record The Giant is Awkward set for release on June 5th, 2026.

The Giant is Awkward is the second album by vibraphonist and composer Victor Vieira-Branco’s Bark Culture. The ensemble—featuring John Moran (double bass) and Joey Sullivan (drums)—is joined by pianist and composer Sam Yulsman for five pieces that mirror the prismatic nature of a sound Vieira-Branco has been tirelessly crafting with the group since 2021. With the addition of Yulsman, the group reveals, as Peter Margasak states, “a heightened sensitivity and grace, with increased harmonic splendor thanks to the added chordal voice. The record also marks the vibraphonist’s clear growth as a composer.”

The band’s 2024 debut, Warm Wisdom, received high praise, with New York Times jazz critic Hank Shteamer listing it among his top debuts of 2024, as well as landing a spot on Bandcamp’s Best of Jazz for September 2024. Since then, Vieira-Branco has joined Rob Mazurek’s Exploding Star Orchestra and the Chad Taylor Quintet, the former of which released the album Smokeshifter, featuring three pieces penned by the vibraphonist. The core trio of Bark Culture was also heavily involved in Rob Mazurek’s score for Kelly Reichardt’s 2025 film The Mastermind.

Dawn Drake & ZapOte is a female “Global Groove” ensemble which celebrates women in world music and incorporates Afro-Cuban and Brazilian rhythms, pop and funk into a mix that is meant for dancing!  With original lyrics that focus on love, empathy, environmental and social justice themes, the band offers a chance to celebrate life and create community through shared experience. A genre bender, ZapOte has a unique sound based on Dawn’s musical influences which draw from Cuban salsa and timba, Haitian kompa as well as Congolese ndombolo and Nigerian Afro-beat. You’ll find some of New York’s finest female musicians playing in this band!

Internationally acclaimed violinist, vocalist, and composer Sruti Sarathy joins celebrated South Indian percussionist Akshay Anantapadmanabhan for a rare duo performance showcasing the depth, virtuosity, and expressive beauty of Carnatic music. Both artists are among the leading voices of their generation, with performances spanning major festivals and concert halls across India, Europe, and North America, as well as collaborations that bridge Indian classical music with jazz, contemporary composition, and global traditions.

Together, they create an intimate musical dialogue where soaring violin and voice intertwine with the intricate rhythmic language of the mridangam. Rooted in centuries-old tradition while alive with improvisation and spontaneous interaction, this performance offers a compelling glimpse into one of the world's most sophisticated and vibrant classical music traditions.

The ambient open mic runs all night, so BYO synth, guitar, pedals, field recordings, poetry, drone, singing bowls, hand drums, cassette tapes, weird electronics, found sounds, homemade instruments, or any sonic experiment living in your closet.

With rare performance video clips author, producer, musician Jerry Zolten takes you on an immersive optisonical journey back through time and the roots of rock ’n’ roll.    

KICKFLIP is a high energy 10-piece pop band focused on capturing the sound of the 2010's. Covering artists such as Justin Timberlake, Taio Cruz, Katy Perry, and Carly Rae Jepsen, the group uses 3 synth players and several vocalists to deliver a great time.

DUCK IRIDESCENT is a funk band originally created for State High's 2023 Battle of the Bands. It has stood the test of time and they continue to perform around State College—now for the first time at Manny's. Fronted by Elijah Snyder (guitar/vox), they perform both originals and covers from the likes of Bill Withers, Tower of Power, Prince, and Vulfpeck. With an EP in the works, this band will be full of surprises.

Manny’s has become one of Central Pennsylvania’s homes for Latin music and dance, bringing together people from across the region for nights like these.

Over the past five years, the Smash Tacklers have grown from a two-man digital passion project to a boisterous six-piece dedicated to furthering the boundaries of human musical enjoyment. Their sound can best be described with genres the band itself has made up, such as "noise funk" or "berp." While remaining essentially under the radar, the band's incendiary live shows have attracted a cultish fanbase. A full horn section allows the band to exemplify the finest luxury in having one's face ripped off. The Smash Tacklers' experiments form an important part of their commitment to overtake Taylor Swift as the most popular artist from Pennsylvania.

As the band's members prepare for their journeys onto a higher plane of existence, the Smash Tacklers are prepared for one last legendary summer, recording an album that threatens to unseat how people everywhere view music. The culmination of this process is the band's final show at Manny's State College, supported by fellow musical luminaries Henry Mathews and the Triboelectric Effect. Nothing will ever be the same.

Frank Hurricane is a songwriter, storyteller, wanderer, and one of the great American folk artists operating today. His songs are full of humor, heart, and hard-earned wisdom, drawing from years spent traveling the country, busking on street corners, hopping freight trains, and connecting with people wherever he lands. Whether performing a song, telling a story, or drifting between the two, Frank has a rare ability to make a room feel smaller and more human. His recordings have become beloved within underground folk circles, but it's his live performances—unpredictable, generous, and deeply personal—that have made him something of a legend among those lucky enough to experience them~

Raised in an old English hamlet with a population of just 50 people, and fed on a diet of the weird and wonderful, mythology and magick, Levi now calls New York City home, having taken his unique blend of psychedelic folk and baroque pop to audiences across the world. His most recent, self-titled, album is a raw and intimate affair made using limited instrumentation and vintage cassette recorders.

Tara Toms an experimental and process-based composer, she has focused primarily on graphic scoring and text-based works for choirs. As an improviser, she works with automatic speech, glossolalia, visualization, playfulness, and altered dream states. Her written work focuses on semiotic density and language games - she is currently developing a 3-dimensional poem. She also writes simple country songs about god and heartbreak.

Growing up in Bulgaria in the late 1990s, brothers Stef and Yavor Lilov were shaped in a myriad of unseen ways by the centuries-old folk music that filtered through their daily lives. It helped mold their creative spirit and inspired them to begin making noise together at a young age, and that unique and intuitive creative alchemy has been a foundation of guitarist/keyboardist Stef and drummer Yavor’s band L’Eclair since they formed it in their adopted home of Switzerland a decade ago.

After spending the past two years meticulously crafting Cloud Drifter, their fourth album and debut for revered U.S. label Innovative Leisure, L’Eclair is for the first time now led by the Lilov siblings. The result is an album seamlessly melding modernity with nostalgia and played with a robotic tightness that remains deeply human. Indeed, Cloud Drifter will move the body as much as it does the brain.

“We really wanted to finally be able to capture in the studio the feeling that people had listening to us live,” says Yavor. “Part of that involved really taking the time to polish the music between recording and mixing. Can we make this more impactful? How can we make it more attention-grabbing? Putting in that work and really dissecting the production helped us achieve the sonic result we were looking for.”

L’Eclair has built an international fanbase thanks to its impressive command of rhythm, dynamics and electro/acoustic alchemy, which has nodded equally to vocal-free titans such as Can and Tortoise, expansive, spacey and blissed-out jams ((2021’s Confusions) and more stripped-down, feel-good and genre-jumping destinations (the 2018 debut Polymood). Two live sessions for KEXP have accumulated nearly 900,000 views combined, beaming L’Eclair onto the playlists of adventurous listeners around the world.

Alash is a group of master musicians from Tuva, a republic in southern Siberia, known for their deep knowledge and practice of traditional Tuvan throat singing (khöömei). Their music is rooted in the nomadic culture of the region, where sound is closely tied to the natural world—wind, water, animals, and the vast steppe. Using instruments like the igil (horsehead fiddle) and doshpuluur (two-string lute), Alash creates layered, overtone-rich vocal music that can evoke multiple pitches at once, blending melody, rhythm, and environment into a single voice.

What makes Alash especially compelling is their ability to honor tradition while remaining open and collaborative. They are deeply committed to preserving Tuvan cultural heritage, but also engage with contemporary audiences through thoughtful arrangements and cross-cultural exchange. Whether performing in concert halls, intimate spaces, or alongside musicians from other traditions, their work offers a rare and immersive listening experience—one that connects ancient practices to the present moment in a powerful, resonant way.

Horse Lords were founded in Baltimore, Maryland in 2010; they evolved from the experimental collective Teeth Mountain and began as a trio with drummer Sam Haberman, guitarist Owen Gardner, and bassist Max Eilbacher, soon adding alto saxophonist Andrew Bernstein to the core ensemble. Though Horse Lords grew out of the fertile Baltimore noise and leftfield rock scene, a storied environment for artists and weirdos that has nurtured many an influential outsider band (Lungfish, Matmos), their approach is more omnivorous than the stippled rhythms of instrumental electric rock would indicate. 

Across sixteen years of frequent touring, Horse Lords have released ten studio, live, and collaboration albums in addition to a split EP with fellow Baltimoreans Lower Dens, a handful of singles and compilation tracks. For RVNG’s FRKWYS series, the band collaborated with Berlin-based composer Arnold Dreyblatt, a onetime student of La Monte Young and Pauline Oliveros whose just intonation chamber music was a crucial part of the post-Fluxus Downtown New York City environment. 

With the relocation of three of the four members to Germany beginning in 2021, the potential for more further creative exploration, and performance opportunities including the Moers Festival (with an 11-piece lineup, interpreting Julius Eastman’s music as well as their own), the interdisciplinary phases of the band’s music was poised for fascinating new directions. The band observes “We are always trying to balance working within the limitations of the quartet and pushing beyond them.

As part of @cpartsfestival and the “Arts Fest After Dark” series, Manny’s Live Performance Space welcomes back the unstoppable force that is Las Guaracheras, joined by a special opening set from the Nevaris Project on Saturday, July 11.

Straight out of Cali, Colombia, @lasguaracheras deliver an explosive mix of Afro-Caribbean rhythms, salsa dura, and Latin jazz that transforms any room into a dance floor. The all-female sextet is known for high-energy performances driven by powerful percussion, vibrant horns, and commanding vocals, creating a sound that feels both deeply rooted and fully alive in the moment.

The @nevarisproject sets things in motion with a heavy, groove-forward blend of funk, dub, and Afro-Latin rhythms. Led by Agustín Nevaris, the group features former Fela Kuti drummer Jojo Kuo alongside breakbeat specialist Lockatron, moving between tight rhythmic interplay and expansive textures. Drawing from a catalog that includes the Bill Laswell-produced Reverberations, the set is built to lock in early and carry through the night.

Orquesta Mi Amor (formerly Ady’s Latin Band) brings together the best musicians in and around State College to play classic and electrifying dance music from across Latin America: salsa, cumbia, joropo, boleros, son, and more.

Lead singer Ady Martinez has been performing with these world-class musicians in various arrangements for the last decade, and this current manifestation of Ady’s Latin Band is a hot new project that offers up the lively flavors of Latin music to dancing and listening audiences across central Pennsylvania.

A founding member of the legendary avant-rock group Henry Cow, Fred Frith has spent more than five decades redefining the possibilities of the guitar. Through improvisation, composition, prepared instruments, and a seemingly limitless curiosity, he has become one of the most influential figures in experimental music, collaborating with artists including Brian Eno, John Zorn, Mike Patton, and countless others across the worlds of jazz, rock, contemporary classical music, film, and dance.

Opening the evening will be @teikumusic , a project founded by Chicago pianist @joshdimension and Detroit percussionist @jonathanbarahaltaylor . The group reframes their respective families’ unique Passover melodies as conduits for spontaneous musical expression. Their self-titled debut, released in 2024, was a meditation on shared history and a tribute to the aurally transmitted ancestral melodies they grew up singing.

Their sophomore album, Klang, expands on this concept by drawing source material from the wider community, rare manuscripts, voice recordings, and memories of late-night ritual chants. Five of the album’s six tracks are based on the same liturgical Passover text, each reflecting a different regional or family melody passed down through generations.

Drawing from these variations, Teiku transforms traditional melodies through improvisation, deconstruction, and collective exploration. Joined on recordings by bass clarinetist @jasonstein33 (Natural Information Society) and bassist Jaribu Shahid (Sun Ra Arkestra, Art Ensemble of Chicago), the group creates music that honors tradition while opening it to new possibilities.

Thee Marloes are a rising soul trio from Surabaya, Indonesia, bringing a fresh global perspective to classic soul music. At first listen their sound may feel familiar—warm crooning guitar, deep-pocket drums, and heartfelt vocals about love and longing—but what sets them apart is the place and spirit it comes from. Soul music from Indonesia is rare, and Thee Marloes have carved out their own lane.

The band features vocalist and keyboardist Natassya Sianturi, guitarist Sinatrya “Raka” Dharaka, and drummer Tommy Satwick. Drawing inspiration from classic soul, American hip-hop, rocksteady, and lovers rock reggae, the trio developed their sound organically through late-night songwriting sessions and local gigs across Southeast Asia. The group truly came into focus when Raka and Tommy discovered Natassya’s powerful voice at a local performance—her church-trained vocals and wide musical influences adding emotional depth to the project.

Recording in their home studio, the trio crafted a raw and authentic soul sound that eventually caught the attention of Big Crown Records. Their debut album Perak blends funk-driven grooves, soulful ballads, and Indonesian-language lyrics into a style that feels both timeless and entirely new—proof that great soul music can come from anywhere in the world.

Official Claire is one of her generation's finest songwriters. The Chicago Reader praised her combination of “sensitivity and straight talk.” Former Wilco member LeRoy Bach says, “Official Claire is my favorite new songwriter. Her songs possess deep wit, and mischief, and all those swaying hooks!” Her live band includes Bach, as well as Brooks Palmer and drummer Quin Kirchner.

Claire is also a calm shredder of guitar. The Singleman Affair called her a “stunning bliss/drone sorceress.” On her most recent release, Midnight Dickbiter, Claire played and engineered the majority of instruments. The beautiful collection maintains a celebration amid darkness, and generosity amid the mundane.

Claire grew up in the Chicagoland area, where she’s played the main stage at the Old Town School’s acclaimed Square Roots festival, and a Lollapalooza after-party with Slow Pulp. She’s currently en route to perform at Wilco’s curated Solid Sound Festival and is also featured at this year’s Chicago standout festival, Sound and Gravity.

Johnny Mullenax, a Tulsa native, grew up in a musical family and started playing guitar at age 5.

In his teens, he followed his family to the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. In typical Johnny fashion, he showed up with just a guitar and ended up sleeping in a stand-up bass case.

At 18, he used a friend’s ID to get into a club, where he became part of a live hip hop band backing rappers.

According to Johnny, “Life is too short to play one style of music, and if you have an opportunity to try something different, then you should give it a shot.”

Claiming wide-ranging influences from AC/DC and The Ramones to John Coltrane and Parliament, Johnny calls his genre-bending sound a funky country bluegrass good time!

An intoxicating gumbo of global soul, surf noir, and psychedelic funk — all filtered through a vintage analog haze. Listening to Gitkin feels like stumbling across a forgotten reel-to-reel in a dusty Havana pawn shop or a smoky Marseilles speakeasy. There’s a deep sense of wanderlust baked into every groove — part spaghetti western, part funk exotica — with twangy guitars that slither like snakes through a desert bazaar.

New Orleans-based Gitkin, also known as Brian J Gitkin, is a Grammy-nominated artist and producer renowned for his work with Cedric Burnside, Bab L’ Bluz, Bernard Purdie, and Cyril Neville, and as the mastermind behind the internationally beloved funk ensemble Pimps Of Joytime. What began as a passion project has grown into a global phenomenon. With monthly streams surpassing 300,000, Gitkin’s self-produced studio albums have resonated deeply across continents.

In 2022, fueled by mounting streaming momentum and international demand, he assembled a live touring trio featuring Palestinian multi-instrumentalist Simon Moushabeck (keys, accordion, percussion) and Cuban-American drummer Washington Duke. Together, the three create a spacious yet explosive live dynamic — weaving hypnotic grooves, desert-tinged melodies, and deep rhythmic interplay into something both transportive and visceral. Since forming, the trio has toured extensively across the United States, Germany, the U.K., the Netherlands, France, and Austria, selling out multiple headline shows and supporting acts such as Steel Pulse, Say She She, The Altons, and Thee Sinseers.

After years of crafting vocal-driven productions, Gitkin embraced the freedom of letting the guitar speak. “With Gitkin, I bring my love for African, Middle Eastern, and South American music into dialogue with American blues and funk,” he explains. “Performing as a trio leaves space for what I call ‘expensive moments’ — those times when something intangible takes over the room and everyone feels it.”

The Garifuna Collective has performed in over 30 countries in 5 continents and have been part of the most celebrated Garifuna albums of all time, including the critically acclaimed Wátina, recipient of the Womex and BBC World Music Award and voted by Amazon as the Number One World Music Album of All Time.

They are a seasoned collective of musicians from across different generations, with a dynamic that comes from of playing and traveling the world together, sharing their music and stories with global audiences. Their performances spark the history and soul of Garifuna culture into vivid life. While their recordings dip into the massive well of Garifuna songs to create new compositions — some of the singers in the band know hundreds of songs!

Secret Planet State College is Central Pennsylvania’s branch of a broader East Coast network of community-minded presenters dedicated to bringing adventurous international and culturally rooted artists to smaller American markets. Operating through a Community Supported Music model, the series helps offset the financial risk of touring while giving local audiences access to globally respected performers they would rarely encounter otherwise. Curated by Gorinto Productions and anchored largely at Manny’s Live Performance Space, Secret Planet State College has become a consistent platform for borderless live music, artist exchange, workshops, and collaborative community events that connect rural Pennsylvania to a much wider cultural conversation
