SECRET PLANET // GITKIN

TICKETS

An intoxicating gumbo of global soul, surf noir, and psychedelic funk — all filtered through a vintage analog haze. Listening to Gitkin feels like stumbling across a forgotten reel-to-reel in a dusty Havana pawn shop or a smoky Marseilles speakeasy. There’s a deep sense of wanderlust baked into every groove — part spaghetti western, part funk exotica — with twangy guitars that slither like snakes through a desert bazaar.

New Orleans-based Gitkin, also known as Brian J Gitkin, is a Grammy-nominated artist and producer renowned for his work with Cedric Burnside, Bab L’ Bluz, Bernard Purdie, and Cyril Neville, and as the mastermind behind the internationally beloved funk ensemble Pimps Of Joytime. What began as a passion project has grown into a global phenomenon. With monthly streams surpassing 300,000, Gitkin’s self-produced studio albums have resonated deeply across continents.

In 2022, fueled by mounting streaming momentum and international demand, he assembled a live touring trio featuring Palestinian multi-instrumentalist Simon Moushabeck (keys, accordion, percussion) and Cuban-American drummer Washington Duke. Together, the three create a spacious yet explosive live dynamic — weaving hypnotic grooves, desert-tinged melodies, and deep rhythmic interplay into something both transportive and visceral. Since forming, the trio has toured extensively across the United States, Germany, the U.K., the Netherlands, France, and Austria, selling out multiple headline shows and supporting acts such as Steel Pulse, Say She She, The Altons, and Thee Sinseers.

After years of crafting vocal-driven productions, Gitkin embraced the freedom of letting the guitar speak. “With Gitkin, I bring my love for African, Middle Eastern, and South American music into dialogue with American blues and funk,” he explains. “Performing as a trio leaves space for what I call ‘expensive moments’ — those times when something intangible takes over the room and everyone feels it.”

SECRET PLANET // Bab L'Bluz (Morocco)

Bab L’ Bluz (literally “The Door of the Blues”) is a Franco-Moroccan band formed in Marrakech in 2018, born from the meeting of Moroccan singer and guitarist Yousra Mansour and French guitarist and producer Brice Bottin. United by a deep passion for Gnawa music, the two began learning the guembri together, forging a singular musical language that became the foundation of the band’s early repertoire.

Armed with electric guembris, Bab L’ Bluz blends Gnawa trance rhythms, Hassani songs from southern Morocco, and Chaâbi polyrhythms, pushing their sound into the realms of psychedelic rock and hypnotic, expansive sonic landscapes. Led by a woman from Doukkala, the group embodies a bold shift in attitude and expression, aligning with Morocco’s Nayda movement—a new wave of artists drawing from local heritage while singing messages of freedom in Darija, the Moroccan-Arabic dialect.

Since their formation, the power quartet has toured extensively around the globe, delivering hypnotic riffs and a mystical, liberating energy that has become the band’s hallmark. Poetic, powerful, and boundary-transcending, Bab L’ Bluz continues to build an ever-expanding sonic universe.

In 2020, the band made a striking entrance with their debut album Nayda!, which was named among Mojo’s Top 10 World Albums of the Year and Songlines Best Albums of 2020, and praised by outlets including The New York Times, Vogue Arabia, BBC, Le Monde, Financial Times, Pan African Music, Uncut, Radio Nova, and Arte Concert.

In 2021, Bab L’ Bluz won their first Songlines Music Award and embarked on a world tour that continues to this day. Over the years, they have performed across Europe, Africa, the Americas, Oceania, and Asia, bringing their hypnotic and liberating sound to audiences worldwide.

After years of near-constant touring, the band released their second album Swaken in May 2024 to widespread critical acclaim. Its eleven tracks pulse with kinetic energy, carrying listeners on a journey that shakes, heals, and inspires.

Today, Bab L’ Bluz continues to evolve, captivating audiences across the globe with a sound that is psychedelic, hypnotic, and deeply rooted in Moroccan tradition.

Takaat ( Of Mdou Moctar) w/ Monsoon & The Sunday Love Club

TICKETS

TAKAAT began (and still operate) as the rhythm section to Mdou Moctar, the breakout Nigerien rock band named for its charismatic frontman. This puts Ahmoudou Madassane (guitar/vocals), bassist Mikey Coltun (the sole American in the group), and drummer Souleymane Ibrahim in the same realm as Calexico. That indie band started out as part of alt-country weirdos Giant Sand, but TAKAAT aren’t seeking to branch out from or expand the sound of their parent outfit. They might have more in common with one of Bob Weir’s non-Dead outfits. Like Weir, Madassane has had to invent his own method of playing rhythm guitar to accommodate a brilliant, dynamic leader–and when that leader’s not in the picture, there’s a lot of space left to fill.

On their debut EP, Is Noise, Vol.1, the trio finds plenty of unusual sounds to plug that void while also sticking to familiar ground. Opener “Amidin” (as with Mdou Moctar, all song titles and lyrics are in Tamashek) thunders ahead with the hard-charging, asymmetrical gallop that drives many Mdou Moctar burners. Madassane sings in the chantlike, circular style of other Tuareg bands such as Etran De L’Air and Tinariwen; it’s melodic but unvarying. Unaccompanied, his vocals could be a funeral lament or a rapturous prayer. Backed by TAKAAAT’s ecstatic yet precise rhythms and percussive heft, they become something both guttural and spiritual, equally meditative and feral.

Celebrated as “the new darlings of American post-rock,” the band has quickly carved out a commanding presence, becoming one of the genre’s most compelling new voices.

Blending the ethereal and the crushing — pairing the sweeping melodicism of Radiohead and Interpol with the visceral weight of Deftones and Isis — Hiroe crafts a striking instrumental rock-metal hybrid that continues to attract a rapidly expanding and fiercely loyal fanbase.

Signed to Pelagic Records — renowned for championing genre visionaries like Mono, God Is an Astronaut, and The Ocean — the band has released two critically acclaimed records, Wrought and Wield, earning widespread accolades from heavy-music authorities including Metal Hammer, Metal Injection, and Metal Sucks.

Following landmark performances at events such as Post Fest, the band now stands at the threshold of its most ambitious year yet, fueled by new music, 2026 festival appearances, and continued touring in support of Wield.

Los Cumbiamberos De Gamero & Canta Emilia Herrera — Gozando Con La Niña Emilia is a vibrant slice of Caribbean Colombian folk and dance music that captures the spirited essence of cumbia and porro as interpreted by an iconic voice and her ensemble. Led by the joyful and expressive vocals of Emilia Herrera — affectionately known as La Niña Emilia — and backed by the rhythmic drive of Los Cumbiamberos De Gamero, this 1984 LP blends catchy dance tunes (“Cundé Cundé,” “Periquito con Arroz,” “Coroncoro”) with the raw, joyous energy of coastal Colombian traditions. Herrera’s voice — at once earthy, playful, and deeply rooted in the folk styles of her homeland — brings to life songs that have become beloved in the region’s musical canon, reflecting both everyday stories and the irresistible call to dance. Gozando Con La Niña Emilia stands as both a testament to her singular artistry and a celebration of the vibrant rhythms and communal spirit of Caribbean Colombian music.

Yallah Yallah is a NYC-based project led by Amit Peled and Segev Harosh, centered around reinterpreting Middle Eastern, North African, and Mediterranean musical traditions through a contemporary lens.

Drawing from Moroccan, Yemeni, Greek, Egyptian, and Israeli styles, their work is rooted in the social and celebratory tradition of hafla—communal gatherings built around rhythm, dancing, and shared experience. They combine electric oud, bouzouki, guitars, and analog drum machines to reshape these forms into something immediate and physical, while still honoring their origins.

The result is a rhythm-forward live show that bridges traditional music and modern club energy—connecting past and present in a way that feels both intentional and alive.

The Caribbean is an American experimental project from Washington, D.C., composed of Michael Kentoff, Matthew Byars, and Dave Jones. Described as “minimalist/drone/Philip Jeck-by-way-of-Carole King” and by the description in a review by PopMatters that “They're taking Brill Building songs and writing them in invisible ink, turning jazz standards into Twilight Zone episodes, turning folk songs into clouds of fog,” the band has been critically acclaimed for its deconstructionist approach to pop music, and its wry, literary lyrics. Their 2011 album Discontinued Perfume was hailed by the Washington Post as "a subtle masterpiece," and DCist proclaimed the following about their record Plastic Explosives: "Let us be clear about this: Plastic Explosives is one of the finest recent records we’ve found, from any act, local or otherwise."

Liam Grant & Sam Boston w/ Rumble and Scream Doo Crowder and YY Dee DUO

TICKETS

Liam Grant is a New England guitarist and improviser cut from the American Primitive cloth. The restless guitar explorations, modal epics, and driving uptempo rags recall the likes of Grant's pedagogue, Takoma Records, and the path that was paved by his forebears John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Peter Walker, Max Ochs and later Glenn Jones, Steffen Basho-Junghans, Jack Rose, and others.

Bridging that past Grant evokes the pith of the landscape where he was raised. Instrumental memoirs and ruminations on the banks of the Merrimack River. Amoskeag. And the place where the waters flow around it. Salmon tails up the river, the exodus to Stratton-Eustis and the last night on Dead River before the great flood.

Sam Boston is from Connecticut. He builds instruments, tools, and sound sculptures. His focus is on resonating objects, long-duration events, and attempts at repetition.

His latest concentration has been self-modified electric 2x4 duo-chord hurdy gurdies and handmade fretless lap steel guitars - instruments he has built for musicians like Tashi Dorji, Henry Birdsey, Zach Rowden and others.

He frequently works alongside his partner Emma Mistele with whom he recorded his last album “Table Music” - pieces for an unstable network of oscillators, microphones, and motors resonating through the table on which they were performed.

Rumble & Scream is a post-industrial folk-rock band from Holy Crick, Pennsylkrainia. On stage as a duo, they mix electric guitars and drums with synthesizers and environmental samples to bring the noise or set the scene accordingly. Frontman Lattimore Scream, a third-generation Ukrainian-American hillbilly-bard, often tells his family folklore in place of stage banter through monologues and narrative poetry. You’ll leave saying: Slava Pennsylkrainia! Glory to Holy Crick!

Week 7:

Dr John The Night Tripper “Gris Gris "

Dr. John — Gris-Gris is a hypnotic and singular debut that conjures the spirit of New Orleans like a sonic voodoo ritual. Released in 1968, this album introduced Malcolm “Mac” Rebennack’s alter-ego Dr. John the Night Tripper, weaving together swamp-blues grooves, New Orleans R&B traditions, psychedelic textures, chants, and ritualistic percussion into a shadowy, atmospheric journey unlike anything else of its era. From the eerie incantations of “Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya” to the trance-like spell of “I Walk on Gilded Splinters,” Gris-Gris feels like a midnight ceremony: rich with creole mystique, murky rhythms, and a dreamlike blend of cultures and sounds that has only grown in stature over time. Though overlooked at its release, it’s since been hailed as a landmark recording — a classic that brought the heart and voodoo heart of New Orleans to a wider, psychedelic audience.

Week 5:

Nicolas Jaar “Space is Only Noise "

Nicolás Jaar — Space Is Only Noise is a defining debut that reshaped electronic music in the 2010s with its patient, introspective, and deeply textured soundworld. Released in 2011 when Jaar was just 21, the album blurs the lines between deep house, ambient, jazz, field recordings, and found sound, inviting listeners into a contemplative sonic space that rewards immersion more than impulse dancing. Rooted in sparse rhythms, drifting piano figures, subtle vocal fragments, and richly layered samples, Space Is Only Noise feels like a late-night dialogue between the organic and electronic — melancholic, mysterious, and unmistakably human. Critics hailed it as one of the year’s most original electronic records, and it has endured as a touchstone for genre-defying, emotionally resonant production.

Mourning [A] BLKstar is a genre-defying collective rooted in Black radical tradition, improvisation, and community practice. Blending soul, punk, hip-hop, free jazz, and spoken word, their music feels less like a band and more like a living conversation—one that moves between grief and joy, resistance and care. The group’s work is deeply collaborative, often pulling from personal testimony, ancestral memory, and the realities of Black life in America.

Onstage, Mourning [A] BLKstar creates an immersive, cathartic experience—raw, political, and deeply human—where songs stretch, collapse, and rebuild in real time. Their performances invite listeners into a shared space of reflection and possibility, honoring struggle while insisting on tenderness, imagination, and collective liberation.

Raphael Rogiński (Poland)

STATE COLLEGE PA // Gorinto & Secret Planet Presents

Presented in partnership with the Polish Cultural Institute New York

Brilliant Polish guitarist and composer Raphael Rogiński brings his singular, searching sound to Manny’s for an intimate evening of deep listening and exploration.

Rogiński bends time and tradition, weaving jazz, folk, spirituals, and free improvisation into something entirely his own. His work has earned Best Album recognition from Pitchfork, including his acclaimed reinterpretations of John Coltrane’s music, alongside musical reflections inspired by the poetry of Langston Hughes. Rather than offering straightforward homage, Rogiński approaches these legacies with restraint and curiosity, creating music that feels both reverent and newly alive.

This is music that rewards attention, unfolding slowly and deliberately. At times sparse and searching, it invites close listening and becomes quietly immersive — raw, deeply human, and completely absorbing. As one listener put it: “I’ve never heard guitar played like this before.”

Opening the evening is Pat Coyle, a Pennsylvania-based songwriter and drummer whose solo work blends melancholy dream pop with explosive, improvisatory free jazz through voice and drums, creating intimate performances that live at the edge of structure and release.

We’re back for year five 🖐️ and settling into what we do best: records played front to back, in good company, with time and space to actually listen.

Each night begins with a short, relaxing guided meditation to bring the room together. Then we drink tea, snack a little, listen to a full album uninterrupted, and hang afterward to talk about what we just heard—no pressure, no right answers.

Week 2: Archie Shepp “Attica Blues”

Archie Shepp — Attica Blues is a landmark jazz record-as-protest that channels the fury, sorrow, and resilience of its era into a vivid musical statement. Recorded and released in 1972 in the wake of the deadly Attica Prison uprising, the album blends soul, funk, blues, big-band jazz, gospel, and avant-garde impulses into a powerful and deeply human soundscape. Its title track opens with gritty grooves and impassioned vocals that speak directly to social injustice, while other pieces—like Shepp’s elegiac horn lines and haunting vocal moments—ripple with tenderness, defiance, and reflection. Attica Blues stands as one of Shepp’s most ambitious and accessible works, a record that fuses political urgency with rich, expansive musical textures that still resonate today
