His music moves between composition and open space—bold, searching, and always alive. Over the years, his work has included commissioned pieces featuring artists like Muhal Richard Abrams, Steve Coleman, and Rudresh Mahanthappa, but at its core, this is about the band in the room, listening hard and moving together.

Mourning [A] BLKstar is a genre-defying collective rooted in Black radical tradition, improvisation, and community practice. Blending soul, punk, hip-hop, free jazz, and spoken word, their music feels less like a band and more like a living conversation—one that moves between grief and joy, resistance and care. The group’s work is deeply collaborative, often pulling from personal testimony, ancestral memory, and the realities of Black life in America.

Onstage, Mourning [A] BLKstar creates an immersive, cathartic experience—raw, political, and deeply human—where songs stretch, collapse, and rebuild in real time. Their performances invite listeners into a shared space of reflection and possibility, honoring struggle while insisting on tenderness, imagination, and collective liberation.

Week 5:

Nicolas Jaar “Space is Only Noise "

Nicolás Jaar — Space Is Only Noise is a defining debut that reshaped electronic music in the 2010s with its patient, introspective, and deeply textured soundworld. Released in 2011 when Jaar was just 21, the album blurs the lines between deep house, ambient, jazz, field recordings, and found sound, inviting listeners into a contemplative sonic space that rewards immersion more than impulse dancing. Rooted in sparse rhythms, drifting piano figures, subtle vocal fragments, and richly layered samples, Space Is Only Noise feels like a late-night dialogue between the organic and electronic — melancholic, mysterious, and unmistakably human. Critics hailed it as one of the year’s most original electronic records, and it has endured as a touchstone for genre-defying, emotionally resonant production.

Week 7:

Dr John The Night Tripper “Gris Gris "

Dr. John — Gris-Gris is a hypnotic and singular debut that conjures the spirit of New Orleans like a sonic voodoo ritual. Released in 1968, this album introduced Malcolm “Mac” Rebennack’s alter-ego Dr. John the Night Tripper, weaving together swamp-blues grooves, New Orleans R&B traditions, psychedelic textures, chants, and ritualistic percussion into a shadowy, atmospheric journey unlike anything else of its era. From the eerie incantations of “Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya” to the trance-like spell of “I Walk on Gilded Splinters,” Gris-Gris feels like a midnight ceremony: rich with creole mystique, murky rhythms, and a dreamlike blend of cultures and sounds that has only grown in stature over time. Though overlooked at its release, it’s since been hailed as a landmark recording — a classic that brought the heart and voodoo heart of New Orleans to a wider, psychedelic audience.

Liam Grant & Sam Boston

TICKETS

Liam Grant is a New England guitarist and improviser cut from the American Primitive cloth. The restless guitar explorations, modal epics, and driving uptempo rags recall the likes of Grant's pedagogue, Takoma Records, and the path that was paved by his forebears John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Peter Walker, Max Ochs and later Glenn Jones, Steffen Basho-Junghans, Jack Rose, and others.

Bridging that past Grant evokes the pith of the landscape where he was raised. Instrumental memoirs and ruminations on the banks of the Merrimack River. Amoskeag. And the place where the waters flow around it. Salmon tails up the river, the exodus to Stratton-Eustis and the last night on Dead River before the great flood.

Sam Boston is from Connecticut. He builds instruments, tools, and sound sculptures. His focus is on resonating objects, long-duration events, and attempts at repetition.

His latest concentration has been self-modified electric 2x4 duo-chord hurdy gurdies and handmade fretless lap steel guitars - instruments he has built for musicians like Tashi Dorji, Henry Birdsey, Zach Rowden and others.

He frequently works alongside his partner Emma Mistele with whom he recorded his last album “Table Music” - pieces for an unstable network of oscillators, microphones, and motors resonating through the table on which they were performed.

Hiroe (pronounced Hero-way) erupted as a seismic force in American post-rock in 2020, emerging from the Philadelphia underground at the height of the pandemic. Celebrated as “the new darlings of American post-rock,” the band has quickly carved out a commanding presence, becoming one of the genre’s most compelling new voices.

Blending the ethereal and the crushing — pairing the sweeping melodicism of Radiohead and Interpol with the visceral weight of Deftones and Isis — Hiroe crafts a striking instrumental rock-metal hybrid that continues to attract a rapidly expanding and fiercely loyal fanbase.

Signed to Pelagic Records — renowned for championing genre visionaries like Mono, God Is an Astronaut, and The Ocean — the band has released two critically acclaimed records, Wrought and Wield, earning widespread accolades from heavy-music authorities including Metal Hammer, Metal Injection, and Metal Sucks.

Following landmark performances at events such as Post Fest, the band now stands at the threshold of its most ambitious year yet, fueled by new music, 2026 festival appearances, and continued touring in support of Wield.

Takaat ( Of Mdou Moctar) w/ Monsoon

TAKAAT began (and still operate) as the rhythm section to Mdou Moctar, the breakout Nigerien rock band named for its charismatic frontman. This puts Ahmoudou Madassane (guitar/vocals), bassist Mikey Coltun (the sole American in the group), and drummer Souleymane Ibrahim in the same realm as Calexico. That indie band started out as part of alt-country weirdos Giant Sand, but TAKAAT aren’t seeking to branch out from or expand the sound of their parent outfit. They might have more in common with one of Bob Weir’s non-Dead outfits. Like Weir, Madassane has had to invent his own method of playing rhythm guitar to accommodate a brilliant, dynamic leader–and when that leader’s not in the picture, there’s a lot of space left to fill.

On their debut EP, Is Noise, Vol.1, the trio finds plenty of unusual sounds to plug that void while also sticking to familiar ground. Opener “Amidin” (as with Mdou Moctar, all song titles and lyrics are in Tamashek) thunders ahead with the hard-charging, asymmetrical gallop that drives many Mdou Moctar burners. Madassane sings in the chantlike, circular style of other Tuareg bands such as Etran De L’Air and Tinariwen; it’s melodic but unvarying. Unaccompanied, his vocals could be a funeral lament or a rapturous prayer. Backed by TAKAAAT’s ecstatic yet precise rhythms and percussive heft, they become something both guttural and spiritual, equally meditative and feral.

SECRET PLANET // Bab L'Bluz (Morocco)

TICKETS

Bab L’ Bluz (literally “The Door of the Blues”) is a Franco-Moroccan band formed in Marrakech in 2018, born from the meeting of Moroccan singer and guitarist Yousra Mansour and French guitarist and producer Brice Bottin. United by a deep passion for Gnawa music, the two began learning the guembri together, forging a singular musical language that became the foundation of the band’s early repertoire.

Armed with electric guembris, Bab L’ Bluz blends Gnawa trance rhythms, Hassani songs from southern Morocco, and Chaâbi polyrhythms, pushing their sound into the realms of psychedelic rock and hypnotic, expansive sonic landscapes. Led by a woman from Doukkala, the group embodies a bold shift in attitude and expression, aligning with Morocco’s Nayda movement—a new wave of artists drawing from local heritage while singing messages of freedom in Darija, the Moroccan-Arabic dialect.

Since their formation, the power quartet has toured extensively around the globe, delivering hypnotic riffs and a mystical, liberating energy that has become the band’s hallmark. Poetic, powerful, and boundary-transcending, Bab L’ Bluz continues to build an ever-expanding sonic universe.

In 2020, the band made a striking entrance with their debut album Nayda!, which was named among Mojo’s Top 10 World Albums of the Year and Songlines Best Albums of 2020, and praised by outlets including The New York Times, Vogue Arabia, BBC, Le Monde, Financial Times, Pan African Music, Uncut, Radio Nova, and Arte Concert.

In 2021, Bab L’ Bluz won their first Songlines Music Award and embarked on a world tour that continues to this day. Over the years, they have performed across Europe, Africa, the Americas, Oceania, and Asia, bringing their hypnotic and liberating sound to audiences worldwide.

After years of near-constant touring, the band released their second album Swaken in May 2024 to widespread critical acclaim. Its eleven tracks pulse with kinetic energy, carrying listeners on a journey that shakes, heals, and inspires.

Today, Bab L’ Bluz continues to evolve, captivating audiences across the globe with a sound that is psychedelic, hypnotic, and deeply rooted in Moroccan tradition.

Formed in 2010 by composer and harmonium player Joshua Abrams, Natural Information Society (NIS) creates long-form, immersive sound environments informed by jazz, minimalism, and traditional musics. Through Abrams’ orchestration of traditional and contemporary instrumentation, the group builds patient, psychedelic music that unfolds slowly and deliberately — music that rewards deep listening.

In 2019, Eremite Records released Mandatory Reality, further expanding the group’s singular approach to rhythm, repetition, and collective focus. Over the years, NIS has featured an ever-evolving cast of collaborators including Lisa Alvarado, Hamid Drake, Ben Lamar Gay, Jeff Parker, Jason Adasiewicz, Chad Taylor, and many more. In 2015, the group collaborated with Bitchin Bajas on Automaginary (Drag City).

“It’s patient, layered music that’s always heading somewhere, sometimes spare and sometimes complex and shimmering.”
Ben Ratliff, The New York Times

“Abrams discovers new levels of mood and tone; his pieces seem to escape time completely.”

Official Claire (Chicago)

Official Claire is the project of Chicago-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Claire Voyant, crafting emotionally rich indie pop rooted in intimacy, melody, and sharp lyrical clarity. Her songs balance warmth and vulnerability with a confident, modern edge — blending elements of indie rock, dream pop, and thoughtful singer-songwriter traditions.

With a voice that feels both immediate and disarming, Official Claire writes songs that linger: personal without being precious, expressive without excess. Her live performances translate that honesty into the room, pairing dynamic arrangements with a strong sense of connection and presence.

Whether performing solo or with a full band, Official Claire creates a space that feels both reflective and alive — inviting listeners into songs that explore relationships, self-discovery, and emotional nuance with care and intention.

Raphael Rogiński (Poland)

STATE COLLEGE PA // Gorinto & Secret Planet Presents

Presented in partnership with the Polish Cultural Institute New York

Brilliant Polish guitarist and composer Raphael Rogiński brings his singular, searching sound to Manny’s for an intimate evening of deep listening and exploration.

Rogiński bends time and tradition, weaving jazz, folk, spirituals, and free improvisation into something entirely his own. His work has earned Best Album recognition from Pitchfork, including his acclaimed reinterpretations of John Coltrane’s music, alongside musical reflections inspired by the poetry of Langston Hughes. Rather than offering straightforward homage, Rogiński approaches these legacies with restraint and curiosity, creating music that feels both reverent and newly alive.

This is music that rewards attention, unfolding slowly and deliberately. At times sparse and searching, it invites close listening and becomes quietly immersive — raw, deeply human, and completely absorbing. As one listener put it: “I’ve never heard guitar played like this before.”

Opening the evening is Pat Coyle, a Pennsylvania-based songwriter and drummer whose solo work blends melancholy dream pop with explosive, improvisatory free jazz through voice and drums, creating intimate performances that live at the edge of structure and release.

Gorinto Listening Series: Week 3 // Archie Shepp “Attica Blues”

We’re back for year five 🖐️ and settling into what we do best: records played front to back, in good company, with time and space to actually listen.

Each night begins with a short, relaxing guided meditation to bring the room together. Then we drink tea, snack a little, listen to a full album uninterrupted, and hang afterward to talk about what we just heard—no pressure, no right answers.

Week 2: Archie Shepp “Attica Blues”

Archie Shepp — Attica Blues is a landmark jazz record-as-protest that channels the fury, sorrow, and resilience of its era into a vivid musical statement. Recorded and released in 1972 in the wake of the deadly Attica Prison uprising, the album blends soul, funk, blues, big-band jazz, gospel, and avant-garde impulses into a powerful and deeply human soundscape. Its title track opens with gritty grooves and impassioned vocals that speak directly to social injustice, while other pieces—like Shepp’s elegiac horn lines and haunting vocal moments—ripple with tenderness, defiance, and reflection. Attica Blues stands as one of Shepp’s most ambitious and accessible works, a record that fuses political urgency with rich, expansive musical textures that still resonate today

Founded in Chicago in 1974, Ethnic Heritage Ensemble emerged from the AACM with a clear and enduring vision: to combine African American music with its deeper African roots, creating new sounds that honor tradition while pointing firmly toward enlightenment and deep listening. Fifty years later, EHE remains one of the only original AACM-nurtured groups still actively shaping the music today.

Led by percussionist, composer, and AACM icon @kahilelzabar , the ensemble is known for its powerful rhythmic foundation, innovative harmonics, and deeply developed ensemble interplay. The music balances structure and freedom — collective polyphony, fearless improvisation, and a spiritual intensity that transforms performance into ritual. Each member is a commanding soloist, grounded in history, originality, and purpose.

This is spiritually charged, rhythm-driven creative music — trance-inducing, expansive, and alive — connecting past, present, and future in real time. A rare opportunity to experience a living lineage of Great Black Music in an intimate setting.

Week 2: Ethnic Heritage Ensemble “Let The Spirit Out”

Ethnic Heritage Ensemble — Let the Spirit Out (Live at “mu” London) is a powerful live statement from Chicago percussionist and composer Kahil El’Zabar and his long-standing ensemble, capturing new material and reimagined classics in an intimate audiophile setting. Recorded over two evenings at London’s “mu” in 2024, this double-album channels the essence of spiritual jazz as ritual — music as communion, release, and collective healing. With El’Zabar’s polyrhythmic percussion and voice anchored by Corey Wilkes (trumpet), Alex Harding (baritone sax), and Ishmael Ali (cello), the group moves through raw, expansive improvisations that fuse tradition with forward-looking expression. Throughout the performance, the band invites listeners to open themselves and let that spirit out — embracing freedom, revelation, and uplift through sound. Let the Spirit Out stands as both a celebration of EHE’s decades-deep journey in Great Black Music and a living, breathing testament to the transformative power of rhythm and community

Gorinto Listening Series: Week 1 // Nala Sinephro “Endlessness”

We’re back for year five 🖐️ and settling into what we do best: records played front to back, in good company, with time and space to actually listen.

Each night begins with a short, relaxing guided meditation to bring the room together. Then we drink tea, snack a little, listen to a full album uninterrupted, and hang afterward to talk about what we just heard—no pressure, no right answers.

Week 1:

Nala Sinephro “Endlessness”

Nala Sinephro — Endlessness is a transcendent journey through sound, where the boundaries between jazz, ambient, and electronic music dissolve into one seamless whole. Anchored by a continuous arpeggio that spirals through ten interconnected movements, this 45-minute album feels less like a collection of tracks and more like a single, evolving consciousness. Sinephro — a Brussels-born, London-based composer and multi-instrumentalist — composed, produced, arranged, and engineered the work herself, inviting collaborators like James Mollison, Nubya Garcia, Morgan Simpson, and Sheila Maurice-Grey to weave delicate saxophone lines, rich percussion, and luminous synth textures into her meditative vision. Endlessness explores cycles of existence, rebirth, and flow, crafting celestial moods that are deeply introspective yet expansive — a soundscape that invites listeners to drift, reflect, and rediscover beauty in stillness and motion alike

Old Horn Thomas w/ Spencer Mckee

Old Horn Thomas w/ Spencer Mckee

Old Horn Thomas was born from the idea that every good story is haunted by its own repetition. One can only return to the same place twice in abstract, never in practice. The very act of returning produces the discovery that things are not how you left them. So every good story is stalked by its own shadow, just out of frame, just out of sight, helpless to cease the eternal drift of memory. A tireless compulsion towards myth, towards true spiritual-fiction and towards fictional spirits has resulted in an assemblage of original music which interrogates familial history, rural religiosity, and a decade of road-worn travel as a touring musician.

Coated in a ruddy patina of dirt roads, gray skies, and industrial decay, Old Horn Thomas’ forthcoming debut album The Last Jew In Central PA asks if we are always already wandering an empty world; late to the party, perhaps not invited at all? Weary pallbearers of history, transfigured in death, even now—as an ominous sword-become-plowshare harkens us to bear witness to the timeless return of the new—unfamiliar—as all returns must be. A fleeting glimpse of something on history’s horizon—a shoreline, perhaps—or maybe it was just a trick of The Light. Doomed to Faith. Doomed to Doubt.

Spencer Mckee is a multi-instrumentalist who makes sound collages on samplers inspired by dreams and memories, from State College and formerly of Ma’am and Mag2.

VIDEO

On their new album Wild Life, DC dance punks Light Beams paint a surreal portrait of a world filtered through front person Justin Moyer’s recent experiences as a protest reporter (and a member of a Pulitzer Prize-winning team that covered the Jan. 6 attack on the United States Capitol). The shadow of the attack looms large over the record as the quintet acutely distills nine songs into a twenty-five-minute package that voyages through insurrection deep into the bittersweet heart of 21st-century America.

From their self-titled debut album through 2020’s Self Help, Light Beams have eschewed traditional melody instruments in favor of Moyer’s minimalist samplers and vocals, Sam Lavine’s drumming and Arthur Noll’s basslines. On Wild Life, they expand this palette with the addition of Leah Gage (vocals, rototoms) and Erin McCarley (vocals, timbales, samples). The result: bigger sounds, bigger themes, and a bigger canvas.

**POSTPONED**BIG LAZY (NYC) (AS HEARD ON THIS AMERICAN LIFE) w/ Andy Tolins

Postponed due to weather-Stay Tuned for new date!

VIDEO

Big Lazy has flourished for over two decades in New York’s downtown music scene, playing their singular brand of noir and twang from iconic NYC clubs - Tonic, The Knitting Factory, Barbès to theThe Museum of Modern Art. Simultaneously gothic and modern, noir and pastoral, Big Lazy’s music conjures images from big sky country to seedy back rooms with deftness and a cinematic clarity. With sparse instrumentation (Stephen Ulrich - guitar, Yuval Lion - drums, Andrew Hall - bass) the trio forges a new American music from archetypes in Rock, Jazz and the Avant Garde.

Big Lazy founder Stephen Ulrich is the composer for the HBO series Bored to Deathand the art forgery documentary Art and Craft. In 2021 he was commissioned to compose 30 pieces for the iconic radio program This American Life. In 2023 Barbes Records released Ulrich’s solo album Music from This American Life.

"Big Lazy, the elegantly gritty instrumental trio led by the extraordinary guitarist Stephen Ulrich, plays stunningly beautiful music that evokes everything from truckers' romps to the haunting film scores of Bernard Herrmann."  The New Yorker

State College–based musician Andy Tolins has been entertaining local audiences for over three decades. For many years, he maintained weekly residencies at Zeno’s Pub, performing every Friday with The Triple A Blues Band and every Wednesday with his bluegrass group Haystack Lighting—traditions that continued regularly until the 2020 pandemic, with both bands still performing monthly at Zeno’s today. A longtime member of the classic rock band The Screaming Ducks, Tolins contributed lead and backing vocals as well as lead and rhythm guitar. In addition to performing, he is a dedicated guitar instructor and lifelong student of the instrument, always continuing his musical journey. Andy can be found performing throughout Central Pennsylvania with a wide range of collaborators, and music from Andy Tolins and Haystack Lighting, along with performances by The Triple A Blues Band and other projects, is available on YouTube and other streaming platforms.

SKORTS (NYC) w/ TUCK AND ROLL & JAY VEIL

TICKETS

At SKORTS’ first show, an amp exploded — call it a freak accident or a catalyzing prophecy — either way, from there was born a band that refused to arrive quietly. And with their debut Incompletement, the group is packaging that power to deliver the album their fans have been waiting for since the group first started taking NYC stages by storm.

Incompletement is pure passion pressed into permanence—polished, stadium-ready rock with a DIY edge, recorded live across three Brooklyn practice spaces with friend and producer Teddy O’Mara. The album is more than SKORTS’ greatest hits—the tracks their fans have eagerly been waiting for since first hearing them live. It also includes two never-performed songs that showcase a more tender side of the band.

SKORTS is a product of creative chemistry and sweet serendipity. The foundation for the band was laid when lead singer and guitarist Alli Walls made what she calls her “big romantic gesture to music” and moved from Denver to New York City in 2021. Upon arrival, she hit it off with Char Smith (lead guitar) at a local guitar shop, and the duo laid down some demos. Char connected with Emma Welch outside a bar, and just like that, the band had their bassist.
