Polish guitarist, composer, and ethnomusicologist Raphael Rogiński comes to Manny's on Friday, October 23, presenting Qırım, his latest project exploring the music, history, and cultural traditions of Crimea and the Crimean Tatars. Drawing on years of research, travel, and engagement with traditional music across Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Qırım examines the relationship between music, identity, memory, and cultural preservation.
An internationally acclaimed guitarist, Rogiński is known for his distinctive approach to solo electric guitar, combining elements of jazz, blues, improvisation, and traditional music. His work has received recognition from publications including Pitchfork, The Quietus, and DownBeat, with particular praise for his intricate fingerpicking and ability to create richly layered music with a single instrument. His interpretations of John Coltrane and Henry Purcell, alongside his original compositions, have established him as a singular voice in contemporary guitar music.
The evening begins at 6 PM with an artist talk and discussion, where Rogiński will explore his research into Crimean Tatar musical traditions, the cultural history of the region, and the role of music in preserving cultural memory. At 7 PM, he will perform Qırım live, bringing these ideas into a musical setting. Presented as part of the Secret Planet series, this event offers an opportunity to engage with an internationally respected musician and researcher through both conversation and performance.
